The deputy leader of the SNP failed to renew his car tax when it ran out at the start of the month.
Keith Brown made the “embarrassing blunder” after the tax on his 11-year-old Volkswagen Passat expired a few days ago. The former justice minister said it was an “honest mistake”. It is understood that the car was not driven while untaxed.
Anyone caught driving an untaxed vehicle is fined. If this is unpaid it can lead to prosecution, a £1,000 fine and the impounding of the vehicle.
Brown is the second government minister to suffer driving embarrassment. In 2016, Humza Yousaf, then justice secretary, was fined for driving without insurance.
